what to expect

Teaching and Lesson style

Learning happens best through interaction – an hour of lecturing is rarely effective. Therefore, my lessons are designed to be comfortable and engaging. I encourage students to walk me through their problem-solving process. This helps strengthen their analytical skills while allowing me to spot and address any misunderstandings.

I aim to create a space where you feel at ease asking me to repeat something or explain it differently. I love questions, they help me understand how to help you better, so please don’t hesitate to ask!

I recognise this interactive approach may not suit everyone. Your education comes first, so finding a tutor whose teaching style matches your learning preferences is essential. Please feel free to contact me through the contact form and book a free 20-minute meeting – we can chat and see if we’re a good fit. I look forward to meeting you!

Lesson types and structure

My teaching approach consists of three core elements: content delivery, practice questions, and exam preparation. More details about each lesson type are provided below.

During term-time, I recommend a balanced mix of content and practice sessions. As exams approach, it helps to focus more on practice questions and exam techniques. Together, we’ll create a personalised lesson structure that fits your specific needs and goals.

Three lesson types

Content Lessons:

Content lessons focus on exploring a topic—or a section of a topic—in detail. Together, we’ll break down the tricker concepts and gradually build your understanding using a variety of activities and techniques, including applying your knowledge to solve problems. These sessions are a great opportunity to revisit challenging topics and resolve any areas of confusion from your studies at school or college.

Practice questions:

With STEM subjects, practice questions are your best friend. We can alternate between covering content for one topic and practice questions for another, or focus entirely on a single topic for both. You’ll practice applying your knowledge to a range of exam-style or drill questions. You’re welcome to bring your own, or I can provide carefully selected questions. This method helps us to track your progress, refine your exam technique, and pinpoint areas where additional support may be needed.

Exam preparation:

As exam season approaches, we’ll shift our focus to working through as many past papers as possible. These sessions will include targeted practice on exam technique and exposure to a variety of question formats, ensuring you feel confident and well-prepared on exam day.
